African Violet - Semi-Double & Double Pansy, Deep Red - Larger PlantGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $11.00 ( Each plant in 5" pot )Available (Exact): 1
This plant is at least 6" diameter and covered with buds and blooms.
Great large prolific semi-double to double DEEP RED blooms on a standard size plant.
Culture of African violets is specific but not difficult. The main concerns are listed here:
SOIL – Pot into a mix of equal parts of peat moss, vermiculite and perlite.
WATER – Use lukewarm water that was allowed to stand for 48 hours to evaporate the chlorine. Water at the base without splashing foliage, to avoid spotting foliage. Keep evenly moist.
LIGHT – Light affects flowering. Turn pots regularly to keep flowers from reaching for the light. Place 3 feet from a south- or west-facing window for the right winter lighting. In spring and summer, an east facing window is preferred. If this light cannot be maintained for eight hours, consider growing under fluorescent lights.
FERTILIZER – Fertilize with a higher phosphorus (middle) number, as 15-30-15. Mix at one-quarter strength and use at every watering. Reduced flowering and paler leaf color indicate too little fertilizer. Pinch spent blooms to encourage the development of more flowers.

African Violet - Single Medium Blue Star with Ruffles - Larger PlantGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $11.00 ( Each plant in 5" pot )Available (Estimated): 1
Single medium blue star with ruffles. Dark green, quilted, serrated foliage with a red back. Standard size plant.
Culture of African violets is specific but not difficult. The main concerns are listed here:
SOIL – Pot into a mix of equal parts of peat moss, vermiculite and perlite. "Violet" soils are not necessarily good for violets! Go by the ingredients, not the label! A bag of good soil should feel like a nice, fluffy, soft, pillow. Repot to freshen soil about every 6 months, but do not use larger than a 5 inch pot, and avoid deep pots.
WATER – Use lukewarm water when soil feels dry to the touch. Water at the base without splashing, to avoid spotting foliage.
LIGHT – Adequate light is important for good growth and bloom. Try to provide bright light, but not hot sun, for 8 hours each day (supplement if necessary). Turn pots regularly to keep flowers from reaching for the light. Or, place a two-tube fixture about 12-18" above plants for 12-13 hours a day. Under fluorescent light, plants may bloom continuously.
FERTILIZER – A "balanced" formula is best, such as 15-15-15. Avoid "bloom boosters." Mix at one-quarter strength and use at every watering. Reduced flowering and paler leaf color indicate too little fertilizer. Pinch spent blooms to encourage the development of more flowers.
TEMPERATURE - Generally violets prefer between 60-80 degrees, although they will tolerate somewhat out of this range. They like moderate humidity too. If you are comfortable, so are they.
GROOMING - Do not allow extra crowns, or "suckers" to form. This will spoil that natural, flat, round appearance, and prevent it from blooming to its full potential. Most violets look and bloom best with about 3 to 4 rows of leaves.

Balloon Flower Plant, Blue - DwarfGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $6.50 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 3
This heavy bloomer gets its name from the way each flower bud swells before its starry petals unfold. Balloon flowers are one of the easiest perennials you'll ever grow, and they bloom in profusion in mid to late summer, when many other perennials are beginning to fade.
The plants form a low, neat mound and bear 2- to 3-inch cuplike blossoms. Balloon flowers are a cottage garden standard, excellent for cutting. To make the flowers last in the vase, sear the stems with a match or candle flame immediately after cutting.
They thrive in full sun or light shade in well-drained garden soil. They appreciate a little afternoon shade in zones 7-8. You won't find a more carefree perennial! Just work a little slow-release fertilizer into the soil in spring, and pick off the flowers as they fade to encourage more blooms. Moderate drought conditions aren't a problem, but it helps to water the plants deeply when the soil dries out too much or if drought conditions persist. Balloon flowers are seldom bothered by insects, and they are very cold-hardy.
Plan the plant's position carefully and mark it to avoid weeding it out in early spring, for spring growth is late to appear.

Beard-tongue Plant, Pale PinkGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $6.50 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 2
Penstemons come from areas with rough growing conditions and should never be exposed to wet or damp earth. A thin, rocky soil in full sun is best. Penstemon species are often used in xeriscape landscaping, as many are native to desert or alpine regions and thus quite hardy. Native Americans long used Penstemon roots to relieve toothache.
Foliage is evergreen in warmer climates. Tubular flowers are in clusters atop strong stems, somewhat like foxglove, and blooming from spring into summer. Plants are best set out in groups so that a mass of flowers is in view. Cut back each stem after flowering to a place just above a set of leaves that show new growth. You may get another flowering later in the summer or early fall.
Wait until all chance of a freeze is over, then cut back your penstemon, leaving stems that are just 6 inches long. This way, the plant will bush out and have a more compact form.

Christmas Cactus Plant - Light Pink, LargeGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $10.00 ( 5" pot )Available (Estimated): 3
**This larger size plant is loaded with buds and blooms, and gift wrapped as shown (assorted colors).**
This popular, winter-flowering, easy-care houseplant makes a great addition to nearly any indoor setting. It performs well under average home conditions with moderate care, adapting to low light conditions, but blooms more readily if exposed to brighter light, so keep in a sunny location indoors. Plants can be moved outdoors in summer, but keep them in a shady or semi-shady location. Too much direct outdoor sunlight can burn the leaves.
The plant requires frequent and thorough watering, during its active growth in spring and summer, keeping the soil slightly moist. Allow moisture levels to drop between waterings. Never let the plant sit in water, as this will lead to root and stem rot. Rather, place a tray of pebbles filled with water beneath your plant to increase humidity. Applying a mild houseplant fertilizer solution every other week is also acceptable. The plant prefers temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees F.
Flowering is related to day length and night time temperatures. Once the plant has ceased all flowering, allow it to go dormant by reducing moisture, light, and temperature. Make sure it receives 12-14 hours of darkness and temperatures around 50-55 F for six weeks in fall. Place your plant in a completely dark room or closet, or cover it each night with a dark piece of cloth (from late September to mid October for December/January bloom.)

Citronella (Mosquito Plant) - smallGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $5.00 ( Each gallon pot )Available (Exact): 5
Pelargonium graveolens Citrosa - Mosquito Plant
A citrus-scented geranium, this is a great patio plant, especially in containers. Be careful not to over-fertilize because too much nitrogen can reduce the fragrance of the leaves. Although the oil from crushed leaves may have some ability to discourage mosquitoes, the plants alone are grown more for their refreshing scent than as a mosquito repellent. Place citronella near a gate or path where you brush against the leaves as you walk by, or in a pot where children can rub the leaves to enjoy their fragrance. Plants are vigorous growers and drought tolerant. Be sure to move indoors before frost.

Consider adding Aquilegia to rock gardens, shady borders, or in masses along walks or drives.

Price: $6.50 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 3
Epimedium, also known as bishop's hat or barrenwort, are long-lived & low-growing. Flowers sometimes bloom before plants leaf out. The leaves, somewhat heart-shaped on wiry stems, may be green, purple, or green with red or purple flushes or veining & make a trim ground-cover layer.

It is a good choice for attracting bees to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. In spring, remove the previous year's foliage if it is spotty and to show off new flowers.

Native Americans made leaf tea to cure mouth sores and eye ailments. Root tea was used to treat diarrhea, as well as made into a poultice for topical wounds.

Herb Plant - GermanderGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $6.50 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 4
Germander is a shrubby, woody-based, clump-forming, broad leaf evergreen. It features 3/4" shiny dark green leaves forming a mound of foliage 12-15" tall. Leaves resemble miniature oak leaves, and turn reddish in autumn and during dry spells. Germander's rose-colored flowers appear in midsummer and last throughout fall. Germander foliage and flowers are usually harvested with hand pruners when the plants are flowering, and then the leaves and flowers are dried to use for crafts.
Germander makes an excellent edging plant or low clipped hedge (somewhat resembling boxwood). Mass as a small scale ground cover or group. Use in rock gardens or herb gardens, or on steep banks because of its creeping roots. This pretty little evergreen is commonly planted in old world knot and herbal gardens. It also prunes very successfully for bonsai subjects.
The garlic-like aroma of the foliage makes it useful in herb wreaths to freshen a room. Medicinally, an infusion is helpful in the treatment of gout. Possessing qualities similar to horehound, an infusion with honey was used for asthmatic conditions and coughs.

Herb Plant - Lavender (heterophylla)Grower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $9.00 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 2
The graceful leaves and tangy fragrance of Lavender heterophylla, a hybrid of French lavender, are easy to enjoy year round. It will throw spikes of deep purple flowers above mounds of pungently fragrant, wooly, silvery toothed foliage. The plant is hardy to Zone 7 (0 degrees F) and warmer, where it may be transplanted to the garden in spring. It looks great in the landscape, in large containers, or trained as a topiary. It is the tallest of the lavenders I offer, growing to 24-36" tall. Like most silver-leaved plants, it prefers dry, well-drained, lean soil.
If you summer your plant outdoors, keep it in a pot and bring it back indoors for the winter, as torrid summers & mild wet winters are not good for it. Unlike most garden lavenders, this tender variety thrives indoors. They need about 5 hours of sunlight each day for winter bloom; a south facing window, sun room or sun porch should provide enough light. Once the flowers have faded, cut off the spike close to the stem. Maintain the overall shape of your Lavender by selective pinching of the new shoots.

Herb Plant - Lavender (Lavandin)Grower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $9.00 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 1
These English lavender crosses, sometimes referred to as Lavandins, come in third in the bloom cycle, starting just as the English Lavenders are finishing, and continuing to mid summer. The workhorses of Lavender, they do it all: bloom lots, grow just the right size, and smell like a million bucks.
The botanical name for the Lavandins is Lavandula x intermedia. The x means it is a cross with two plants. In this case, it is L. angustifolia and L. latifolia. The intermedia means that these crossed plants have qualities of both parents, or it is intermediate between them.
Lavandins have long gray leaves, twice or more the size of L. angustifolias. They also grow much larger and faster and are more adept at dealing with heat.
This Lavender has a long, slender flower wand that is useful for dried bud collecting. The buds come cleanly and easily away from the stalk.
Harvest lavender stems at any time by cutting them from the plant. However, avoid clipping more than every third stem to keep the plant looking full. Flowers will keep their perfume for months when you harvest just before they are entirely open. To dry flowers, gather a bunch of stems and hang them upside-down in a dark, well-ventilated place to preserve color and keep the stems from molding.
Remember that lavender needs good drainage and good air circulation. Do not over-water, and allow the soil to dry before watering again. When there is a lot of heat and humidity, fungus can attack the plants, turning the leaves brown. To minimize the chance of having such a problem, mulch with pebbles or sprinkle sand around the base of the plant for faster evaporation. If you cut the blooms, trim in a way that thins the plant a bit, leaving it open for better air circulation.
