They are grown in temperate regions as houseplants, primarily for their attractive foliage. But with good east or artificial lighting, they will also bloom at regular intervals throughout the year. This is the plant I had formerly mis-identified as Astrantia, or Masterwort. I finally found someone on a plant ID site who was able to give me the correct ID. Sorry for the confusion! This is actually one of the stranger early spring perennials... Mukdenia rossii. I'm sorry that it doesn't have a common name, since that Latin name is a mouthful. Mukdenia rossii is native to rocky slopes and ravines in China, Manchuria and Korea. It is a compact herbaceous perennial similar to coral bells in habit and height. Palmate medium green leaves are tinged with bronze and attractive throughout the growing season. White, bell-shaped flowers rise above the foliage clump to 16” tall in March and April. Best grown in moist, fertile, well-drained soils in part shade, it appreciates afternoon shade or sun dappled shade in the south. Plants spread over time by short creeping rhizomes, and may self-seed in optimum growing conditions.
