Echinacea TinctureGrower: Cline Apothecary
Price: $19.99 ( 2 oz )Available (Estimated): 6
Echinacea that may work to maintain optimal immune function. Specifically‚ echinacea purpurea might assist your body in fighting off certain infections by stimulating your immune system; it can stimulate immunity by providing polysaccharides‚ which are chemicals that can activate macrophages (white blood cells that ingest foreign materials in order to fight off certain infections). As a result‚ echinacea may play a role in shortening the duration of the common cold while potentially lessening the severity of its symptoms.
Made with cane alcohol and echinacea.
A note on tinctures: Herbs in liquid form are potent and can be quite bitter or medicinal tasting. While most people adjust to the strong flavor profile, it may be a bit surprising at first. Make sure you shake the bottle thoroughly and take sublingually (under the tongue) for the most effective result. If the strong flavor is just too much for you, but you still want the benefits, try adding your tincture to a warm or cold beverage.

No known precautions. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.

Four thieves in a caplet. The stories behind Four Thieves Vinegar, said to date to the 17th century when plague struck Toulouse in France, intrigued me. The legend tells of four thieves who robbed the homes and corpses of those who had died of plague, but who allegedly survived the disease thanks to a herbal vinegar blend.
The exact contents of the original recipe are unknown, but a version by herbalist Jean Valnet in the early 20th century is said to resemble the original more closely than any other.

Galangal root (alpinia galanga) grows in the tropical climates of east Asia. Galangal is a shrub with long, thin leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish-brown rhizomes. A member of the ginger family, galangal roots are aromatic and have a sweet and spicy flavor. The root has been used as a spice and for its wellness-supporting properties in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda. Galangal root is generally combined into herbal formulations and tea blends.
Galangal is an East Asian tropical shrub with lance-like leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish brown, woody rhizomes. It grows mainly in the Eastern Himalayas and Southwest India, and was introduced to Europe in the 9th century. Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179 C.E.) referred to galangal as the spice of life and used it in many of her formulas. The name galangal is derived from the Arabic khalanjan, referring to Chinese ginger, whose family it is a member of. Galangal is an important herb in Saudi herbal medicine. It is used in many magical workings throughout the world. One reported use is that if you spit the juice from chewing this root on the floor of a courtroom before the judge enters, you will win the case.
