Tomato Plant - Arkansas TravelerGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Exact): 3
This tomato hails from the state of Arkansas, where it was bred at the University of Arkansas by Joe McFerran of the Horticulture Department. He released the tomato to the public in 1971 under the name “Traveler.” It wasn’t until later that it gained the name of its home state. The tomato “Arkansas Traveler” produces high quality, small to medium fruits that, like so many varieties from this state, have a pleasant pink cast to them. The fruits have a very mild flavor, making them a good choice for slicing in salads and for convincing kids who claim they don’t like the taste of fresh tomatoes.
Arkansas Traveler tomato plants are bred with heat in mind, and they stand up very well to the hot summers of the American South. Where other varieties wither, these plants keep on producing even in times of drought and high temperatures. The fruits are very resistant to cracking and splitting. The vines are indeterminate and tend to reach about 5 feet (1.5 m.) in length, which means they need to be staked. They have good disease resistance, and usually reach maturity within 70 to 80 days.

Tomato Plant - Brandywine, PinkGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Estimated): 1
Brandywine will never win an award for the prettiest tomato, but it just might win for tastiest. This is a rich, full-flavored tomato that doesn’t disappoint. The fruits are large, about a pound (454 g.) each, and are often a little misshapen or ridged. The skin is a pinkish-red color. These tomatoes can be used in a variety of ways in the kitchen, but they are prized for simply slicing and enjoying raw and fresh right off the vine. They do ripen later in the season than other varieties, but the wait is well worth it.

Tomato Plant - Brandywine, RedGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Estimated): 2
The Red Brandywine tomato plant is a Pennsylvania Amish heirloom dating to 1885, with large potato-leaved foliage. It bears large scarlet beefsteak-shaped fruit, popularly considered among the best tasting available. Even when fully ripe, the tomato can have green shoulders near the stem.
Brandywine tomatoes can bear fruit up to 1.5 lbs (0.7 kg), requiring 80 to 100 days to reach maturity, making it among the slowest maturing varieties of common tomato cultivars. Brandywine has been described as having a "great tomatoey flavor", (others have called it a beautifully sweet tomato that is offset by a wonderful acidity), leading to heavy usage despite the original cultivar's relatively low yield per plant.

Tomato Plant - Chocolate CherryGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Exact): 1
Days to Maturity: 70 from transplant
Indeterminate
Chocolate Cherry is so much more than a pretty face. These 1-inch beauties boast the most flavorful tomato tang in the family, from their delicious thin skins to their combinations of gels and solids, sweets and meats, in every bite.
Appearing in clusters of 8 all over this compact vining plant, these miniatures ripen delectably from green to lavender to richest mahogany. They have a fresh-grown flavor and texture no store-bought variety can equal, from their rich fragrance to that great bite as they are popped whole into your mouth or scattered on salads. Truly a gourmet variety, they keep coming all summer.
To make the most of this flavor, you may want to harvest these tomatoes a day or two before they are fully ripe and let them bake in the sunshine of a kitchen window. This prevents cracking and theft from birds, who also find them irresistible, and assures that each Chocolate Cherry reaches its peak of flavor. There's nothing to compare in the cherry tomato family.
This plant reaches 5 to 6 feet high and about 3 feet wide, sometimes continuing to grow and set new fruit into autumn. It might just do for a large container, and should certainly be front and center in the vegetable garden. You must try this gourmet delight.

Tomato Plant - Mortgage LifterGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Exact): 4
A legendary tomato always in demand in the Mid-Atlantic states. The following history is based on portions of our 1985 taped interview with M.C. Byles who developed this tomato in the early 1930s while in Logan, WV. Mr. Byles is affectionately known as “Radiator Charlie.” He earned that nickname from the radiator-repair business he opened at the foot of a steep hill on which trucks would often overheat. Radiator Charlie had no formal education or plant-breeding experience, yet he created this legendary tomato by cross-breeding four of the largest-fruited tomatoes he could find: German Johnson, Beefsteak, an Italian variety, and an English variety. One of the four varieties was planted in the middle of a circle. Then, using a baby’s ear syringe, he cross-pollinated the center plant with pollen from the circle of tomatoes. Next year he selected the best seedlings: he planted the best seedling in the center and the rest in a circle around it. The pollination and selection process was repeated six more years until he had a stable variety. After Charlie developed and named this large tasty tomato he sold plants for $1 each (in the 1940s) and paid off the $6000 mortgage on his house in 6 years. Each spring, gardeners drove as far as 200 miles to buy Charlie’s seedling tomatoes.
Fruits of Mortgage Lifter can average 2½ lbs and may reach 4 lbs when grown well. Plants are very productive and disease-resistant, and continue to bear until frost. These large, slightly flattened, pink-red tomatoes are meaty and flavorful with few seeds.

Tomato Plant - OxheartGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $3.00 ( quart pot )Available (Exact): 4
Appropriately named for their shape and size, oxheart varieties of tomato can produce fruit that weigh up to three pounds. They are very meaty with few seeds, making them a great slicing tomato. Their size also makes them a good tomato for stuffing, and since there are few seeds, their meat works well in sauces and salsas.
The yield from oxheart tomatoes isn’t as good as some other types, but we still plant one or two each season just because they are so flavorful and juicy. Seed growers are developing these plants to have better production, so as time goes on we should find increasing yields from the plants.

Tradescantia Plant - Spiderwort, PurpleGrower: Dogwood Valley Greenhouse
Price: $6.50 ( trade gallon pot )Available (Estimated): 6
Spiderwort is an evergreen perennial very hardy in USDA zones 4-9. In zone 7, the plants bloom in mid to late spring. Individual flowers measure up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) across. Flowers open in the morning and close in the evening. Very showy! Foliage should then be cut back almost to the ground after bloom to encourage new growth and a possible fall bloom. When the stems of spiderworts are cut, the stem secretion hardens threadlike and silky (like a spider's web), hence the common name.
Tradescantia are very easy plants to grow, anywhere from full sun to full shade, in most any soil. They will grow in containers using 2 parts peat moss to 1 part loam to 1 part sand or perlite. Although the plants are very drought tolerant when planted in the landscape, in containers they should be watered and allowed to dry slightly before watering again. They are fertilized only once during the growing season. Can become very weedy if the seed heads are allowed to develop.
